Positive Trait: Wise
Through all of Jeanne-Marie’s trauma, she has come out the other end of it a wise and thoughtful person. She is excellent with children because she knows how to handle people with low impulse control. She is able to stand up to Magneto (who far exceeds her in power) because she knows what her values are, and how to distinguish her values from his values, and who she is from his idea of what “mutantkind” is, when he aims to paint his values as the values of all mutantkind. She was hesitant to start dating Daken, not because of her own self-flagelation (as sign of her maturity and evolution as a character), but because she was wise enough to assume (based on the information she had) that his powers could feasibly manipulate her. When asked about why her brother behaves the way that he does, she was able to explain quite succinctly what trauma does to the brain, a reflection of her own growth through trauma, while also an assessment of someone else’s mental state. She is able to understand other people because she has been forced to understand herself.

Negative Trait: Unstable
Jeanne-Marie Beaubier has been diagnosed clinically insane since her early twenties. In her youth, she sublimated years of abuse and guilt at the hands of the Sisters at Madame DuPont's School for Girls into an alternate personality, who goes by Aurora. Her powers first manifested when she tried to throw herself off of a roof at thirteen. When she tried to tell the Sisters that she had experienced divine salvation, she was beaten; the final straw on her fragile brain, and so Aurora was born. Aurora is everything that Jeanne-Marie is not: she is extroverted, slutty, confident, exciting. She exists as a protective measure against the world, but Jeanne-Marie and her alter have been at odds for a very long time, and from the start of Jeanne-Marie’s comics run. Jeanne-Marie wants to be modest, decent, well-behaved, and Aurora has none of it, acting out and doing what she likes. This struggle between the two personalities is what fundamentally makes Jeanne-Marie unstable, more than the fact that she is clinically unwell. There have been multiple suicide attempts, her personality can be erratic due to this warring nature, and the fact that repeated conversations in the comics with other people have shown that she doesn’t always tell people about her condition–hence, erratic confusion. Only recently have Aurora and Jeanne-Marie seemed to find some peace, and the headcanon is that she’s currently actually in therapy and well medicated, which helps stabilize the instability a bit (comics, actually dwell on self-care? At the expense of page economy? Never). Still, her condition is only one that can be managed, not cured.

Negative Trait: Violent

A violent streak is someone that people don’t expect from her, with her modesty, the nature of her powers NOT being strength-based, and her occasional extroversion, but Jeanne-Marie is a deeply violent person in her soul. When (in an argument in her own head between herself and Aurora) Aurora threatened to leave her and take full control, to exist without her, her immediate mental response was to grab her and beat her to a pulp, force her to stay. She is not against taking the law into her own hands, and mislead her entire team into thinking someone murdered her to cover up the fact that she murdered the man herself. Even emotionally, she is violent. As Jeanne-Marie, she can be judgemental and bitchy, from everything to mean commentary on people’s clothes and state of dress to extremely pointed insults to someone’s character (see: Carol Danvers, Walter Langowski, her own brother), to slut shaming, to everything in-between. When faced with the discomfort of seeing her ex after many years, she immediately ran to make out with her new boyfriend right in front of him; for Jeanne-Marie, emotional violence is still violence, and violence is often her strongest impulse.

Negative Trait: Hail Mary Full of Shame/Ego
This may sound like two negative traits, but it’s not I promise. It’s one problem all wrapped together, thanks to her dissociation. Due to her Catholic upbringing, the abusive punishments of the Sisters, and the behavior of her alter, Jeanne-Marie is notably a very shame-driven person, which lead to her multiple suicide attempts, and her multiple occasions of being manipulated into siding with people who seek to subjugate mutants, who offer her some sense of security (a code of law during Civil War II, a cure for her illness with Weapon X), . She considers herself a victim of Aurora, calling Aurora (and so herself) a tramp. She has been experimented on in attempts to rid herself of Aurora (and the small handful of other minor alters she has, who have only had page time a total of once), she dresses modestly (like a school-teacher) and often keeps information so tightly to her chest that she isolates herself. She will run out of a room if pressed too hard, will misdirect or respond with barbs, to keep her secrets and keep herself isolated. She has a very hard time believing that she is loved, no matter how often her brother tries to remind her. The aggression of her shame seems to have mellowed out with age (and the above wisdom), but the shame is still present. It is a shame for her mental state, for her sex drive, her impulses, for her violent tendencies, and all the things that were originally sublimated into Aurora. This is why Aurora’s ego is the same trait as her shame: Aurora’s ego, her pride, her over-self-confidence is a response to her shame, and is everything inside of her that she is ashamed of. Aurora is a narcissist, because she exists as a counterbalance to all of Jeanne-Marie’s shame.

Powers and Abilities: Jeanne-Marie is not an omega-level mutant so I don’t think she needs to be powered down. She possesses super speed and the ability to fly. She has high endurance and strength when she is in motion, the faster she flies the tougher she is. She is also able to generate light, though at a much greater extreme when in contact with her brother.
